Alexandria was first founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great. As he was passing through Egyptian territory, Alexander wanted to build a large Greek city on the Egyptian coast that would bear his name. the reason for him choosing the site of Alexandria was because he envisioned building a causeway to the nearby island of Pharos that would generate two impressive and natural harbors. Alexandria was intended to create a Hellenistic centre in Egypt and to be the link between Greece and the rich Nile valley. After the foundation, Alexander had left Egypt and never returned to the city during the rest of his lifetime.
