Alexandria was first founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great. As he was passing through Egyptian territory, Alexander wanted to build a large Greek city on the Egyptian coast that would bear his name. the reason for him choosing the site of Alexandria was because he envisioned building a causeway to the nearby island of Pharos that would generate two impressive and natural harbors. Alexandria was intended to create a Hellenistic centre in Egypt and to be the link between Greece and the rich Nile valley. After the foundation, Alexander had left Egypt and never returned to the city during the rest of his lifetime. 

Alexandria, located in Egypt’s north coast, is a charming city on the Mediterranean. Did you know? Alexandria is the third-largest city in Egypt and the seventh-largest city across Africa. With a total population of 5.2 million Alexandria is the largest city within the Mediterranean and the fourth largest city in the Arab world and the ninth-largest urban area in Africa. The city stretches across 40 km of Egypt along the Mediterranean Sea. Alexandria has become a popular tourist destination across the globe. The city also has an important industrial centre because of its natural gas and oil pipelines from Suez. Furthermore, it was home to a lighthouse ranking among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World as well as a storied library. It is an ancient city and the principal seaport of Egypt. Here, the incomprehensible is combined. Greek architecture, intertwined with Egyptian mosques. Here, old buildings coexist with new high-rise buildings. The summer season traditionally falls between April and October, which is dry, likely to be relatively hot and also peak travel time for tourists from all corners of the globeThe winter season runs between November and March, which is dry and moderately warm, however in the evening the temperatures drop across the desert allowing it to become much cooler at night. August is the hottest month in Alexandria with an average temperature ranging between 30-33°C and the coldest month is January with a low of 18°C.

A historical, archaeological site in Alexandria. Considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. The Catacomb, a vast cemetery housing elaborate tomb monuments, statues and archaeological objects from the Pharaonic ages. The catacombs, are also known as Kom El Shoqafa, meaning Mounds of Shards. There was broken terra cotta, plates, jars, and other clay objects on discovering the tomb’s area. 
 

 

 

 

A Roman triumphal column, built in Alexandria. Set up in Augustus Diocletian’s honour between 298-302 AD. The giant Corinthian column initially supported a colossal porphyry statue of the emperor in armour.

A 15th-century AD defense fortress located on the Mediterranean sea coast, in Alexandria and established in 1477 AD by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa’it Bay. The Citadel is on the eastern harbor entrance of the Pharos Island. It was on the exact site of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. 

 

 

 

 

A primary library and cultural centre on the Mediterranean Sea shore in Alexandria’s Egyptian city. The library shelf space caters for eight million books. The library also houses a conference centre, specialized libraries for maps, multimedia, the blind and visually impaired, young people, and children. It also has four museums, fifteen permanent exhibitions and four art galleries for temporary exhibitions, a planetarium and a manuscript restoration laboratory.

El Alamein offers bundles of history in a village off Egypt’s Mediterranean coast 130 kilometers west of Alexandria. Known for its 1942 WWII battle, commemorated in El Alamein War Museum with tanks and uniforms. Desert plants surround El Alamein War Cemetery’s headstones. A German War Memorial, a fortress with a central obelisk, built over a mass grave outside the town. The Italian War Memorial is the largest of the various national memorials.
