Built around the Ancient marine port, the town of Safaga is the gateway to the River Nile from the Red Sea. Historically it went by the name of Philotera named in honour of Pharaoh Ptolemy II Philadelphus deceased sister. The port is considered to be the leading export centre for phosphate. Also, often used as a gateway for people heading to Mecca in Saudi Arabia to perform the Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj.

There are many opportunities to join a wide variety of days out from Safaga. Firstly, a trip to Luxor by road and explore the worlds most incredible open-air museum.
