In the 13th century, Sultan Salahuddin built the fortress and used for that also some of the stolen blocks from the famous Cairo Pyramids.
Already visible from afar and for many people, one of the most important Cairo landmarks is the Alabaster Mosque. After an explosion in the ammunition dumb destroyed part of the Citadel, Muhammad Ali built an impressive Mosque, the so-called Alabaster Mosque, in the destroyed parts. The Mosque was built after the model of Turkish mosques in Istanbul, and his son Said Pasha finished the construction process in 1857.
