Inauguration of the Sphinx Avenue Luxor (El Kebash Road)

El Kebash Road

The creators of this spectacle made excellent work in integrating the individual highlights of Luxor into the celebration. Impressive backdrops, an illuminated balloon ride over the bank of the Nile River, illuminated felucca rides on the Nile, elegant Nile Cruise ships, as well as the beautiful backdrop of Luxor West Bank, were part of the event. Outstanding was also the Hatshepsut Temple, illuminated by light. All of this created a breathtaking atmosphere under the evening sky.

The result was a successful performance, firmly modelled on the Opet festival in the time of the pharaohs, and was co-designed by many well-known artists.

Luxor, the biggest open-air museum in the world,

was created after years of demolition and restoration work.

Many years of demolition work made some residents of Luxor angry, as many houses, shops, mosques and churches had to give way for the 2.7 km long processional path.

With the discovery of the remains of the old Sphinx Avenue Luxor in 1949 by the Egyptian archaeologist Zakaria Ghoneim, the idea of restoring the Avenue of Sphinxes arose in 2005 to confirm Luxor as the biggest open-air museum in the world.

First, the initial work to restore the Sphinx Avenue Luxor formed a long demolition swath through Luxor. Many Egyptians had to leave their houses, which shaped the cityscape for decades. Also, old buildings, mosques and churches had to give way to the restoration work.

During excavation work, many discoveries were made, including entire workshops with large ovens, well-preserved flower pots, wine presses and many ancient walls from the time of the pharaohs – Memories of the life in an ancient city right under the buildings of the cityscape of modern Luxor.

The revolution in 2011 brought work to a standstill, and excavations did not resume until 2017. The result of all the hard work was the opening of El Kebash Road in November 2021!

After a long administrative struggle and now a hopeful upswing for the economy, the resentment of many residents of Luxor should now be followed by pride for the history of their country!

The opening ceremony, broadcast worldwide, will make sure that a lot of people soon will think about a holiday in Egypt. Besides that, also Egypt lovers will make sure to return as quick as possible.
