Tour Program

4x4 Jeep Tour to the desert city

4x4 Jeep tour to the desert city starts with the pick up from the El Gouna Hotels by our Sempre Travel Egypt employee. From here, we set off in direction of the desert for our first stop of the Egypt ghost city – El Gouna day trips

Visit of a Bedouin Village

Explore the traditional way of life of the desert dwellers in a walk through a Bedouin Village. Look over the shoulder of Bedouin women while they prepare some food. Maybe we are right on time to see them making some bread. Just the smell of traditional break will make you want to try it!

We are happy to help you to put on the headscarf for protection against the sun and wind before we continue our tour with a

Camel Ride

Bedouins use the camels mainly for transportation. After a fun ride on the Camel, we make our way to our main destination of our Egypt ghost city Tour with the 4x4 Jeep ride to the abandoned ruins of the

Ghost city Umm al Huwaytat

We interrupt our journey to take in the impressive panoramic view of the entire abandoned village. Here, our guide will explain to us some more about the history of the abandoned Umm al Huwaytat, that became one of the largest phosphate mining areas in Egypt and once was  inhabited by 16,000 residents.

During the time of phosphate mining, a complete infrastructure was created, with a school, hospital, shops, apartments and mosques. In the ghost city, you can still find remains of a railway line, used to transport phosphate to the port. From here, it was delivered to England. On the way back, the train transported food for the village.

Ghost city traditions

Phosphate was used to power phosphate lamps, the lighting system of that time and predecessor of generators till today’s electricity.

In 1996, Umm al Hawaytat was hit by a flood from which it suffered great damage. In 2000, as a result of the flood, it became one of the “Egypt ghost city”, after its inhabitants looked for another place to stay. Today the abandoned city is one of Egypt’s tourist attractions. After visiting some of the houses that have been preserved, we continue our way for a

Visit of the phosphorus mines

The phosphate mine leads deep down into the mountain range, where you can see the former phosphate mining up close. With some impressions of this abandoned ghost city and hopefully some good snapshots, we end the Egypt ghost city - El Gouna day trips, one of our Hurghada day trips from El Gouna for the return to your accommodation in El Gouna.
