We interrupt our journey to take in the impressive panoramic view of the entire abandoned village. Here, our guide will explain to us some more about the history of the abandoned Umm al Huwaytat, that became one of the largest phosphate mining areas in Egypt and once was inhabited by 16,000 residents.
During the time of phosphate mining, a complete infrastructure was created, with a school, hospital, shops, apartments and mosques. In the ghost city, you can still find remains of a railway line, used to transport phosphate to the port. From here, it was delivered to England. On the way back, the train transported food for the village.
Phosphate was used to power phosphate lamps, the lighting system of that time and predecessor of generators till today’s electricity.
In 1996, Umm al Hawaytat was hit by a flood from which it suffered great damage.
